Somerset Win But Ipswich Progress
The Ipswich Witches just did enough to ensure they progressed by a 91-89 aggregate scoreline despite going down 47-43 to the depleted Somerset Rebels in the Premier League KO Cup second leg. With huge injury problems, Somerset fielded four guests, with Kyle Howarth, Josh Auty, Jari Makinen and Gary Irving all coming into the side which only contained two regular Rebels riders.
The visiting Witches took the early initiative, with reserves Mathieu Tresarrieau and guesting Ashley Morris raced clear for a heat two maximum.
Somerset soon bounced back though, with James Wright and Josh Auty instantly scoring a 5-1 for the home side to draw them level once more.
Two heats later, that duo were on the receiving end of a 5-1 as Rohan Tungate and Leigh Lanham got the better of them to move the visitors up by four again, before Doolan and Risager extended the Ipswich lead to six in heat 7 with a 4-2.
The ninth race of the night saw the Auty and Wright combination having success again with their second maximum to pull Somerset back within two.
Jason Doyle and Kyle Howarth then made it two out of two for the Rebels to reverse the two point deficit in their favour moving into the closing stages.
Heats 11 and 12 were both level, before Doyle and Howarth scored another heat advantage in heat 13, this time a 4-2 which moved Somerset into a four points lead with two heats remaining.
That was how things remained, as wins for Risager and Lanham wins in heats 14 and 15 respectively ended in 3-3s to give Somerset the win, but not quite enough to progress as they fell just two points short on aggregate following their 47-43 win on the night.
Somerset were fired to the win on the night by their temporarily reconstructed top order. Usual Rebels Jason Doyle (15+1) and James Wright (8+2) were excellent, whilst guesting men Kyle Howarth (8+1) and Josh Auty (12+2) were excellent. Although that alone gave them enough to win on the night, poor displays from their reserves Jari Makinen (4+1) and Gary Irving (0) ensured that they fell short of an aggregate victory by just two points.
On the other hand, Ipswich put in a much more rounded display in which every rider scored at least 5 points. Leigh Lanham (11) was the top scorer with a strong contribution, whilst Rohan Tungate (9+1) and reserve Mathieu Tresarrieau (9+1) both made paid double figures. Although nobody added a real huge score, the rest of the team carried out their roles accordingly, with Kevin Doolan (5+1), Morten Risager (5) and Ashley Morris (4+3) all scoring solid points. Although the lack of a real big scorer saw them fall just short on the night, their all around consistency ensured they pushed Somerset very close and did do enough to progress to the next round.

Edinburgh Storm To Sheffield Triumph
Craig Cook and Andrew Tully both struck maximums as the Edinburgh Monarchs cruised to a superb 56-37 home win over the Sheffield Tigers.
The opening two heats saw the meeting remain level, after both sides traded 5-1s, before the home side moved four points ahead in heat 3 with another maximum from Matthew Wethers and Theo Pijper.
A brace of level races followed, before first Cook in heat 6 and then Tully next time out doubled the Monarchs advantage to eight with wins that resulted in heat advantages.
Derek Sneddon and Mickey Dyer then paired up for a vital 5-1 in heat 8 for Edinburgh, and with that they moved 12 points clear.
However, that enabled Sheffield to nominate a rider for double points, and when American reserve Ricky Wells took a tactical ride he duly delivered a win which resulted in a 7-2 in the Tigers favour.
That moved Sheffield back within 7, but the deficit was soon stretched back to 9 when another Cook win in heat 10 instigated an Edinburgh 4-2 again.
3-3s in heats 11 and 12 left the meeting in the balance, with Sheffield in with a fighting chance of a losing bonus point, but those hopes were quickly dashed. Initially, Cook and Tully raced away for a heat 13 maximum, before another heat advantage in the penultimate race of the evening wrapped up the meeting with Edinburgh ahead by 15. Finally, Tully and Cook created an even more emphatic 56-37 final scoreline with a final heat 5-1 and completed their maximums in the process.
Edinburgh had their charge led by Craig Cook (13+2) and Andrew Tully (15), but it really was a sublime performance from the entire main body which made the win so comfortable. Number two Derek Sneddon (7+1) did very well, whilst middle order pairing Theo Pijper (7+1) and Matthew Wethers (9+1) ensured that every rider from 1 to 5 scored at least paid 8. At reserve, Mickt Dyer (3+1) and Charles Wright (2) didn’t perform particularly well, but with the way everyone else scored they did not need to.
Conversely, Sheffield were strong towards the lower reaches of the team, with reserve Joe Haines (8) and Emiliano Sanchez (6+2) both performing well to support number five Ricky Wells (10+1). However, there were poor performances throughout the main body with the exception of Wells, with number one Joseph Franc (6), Hugh Skidmore (1) and Richard Hall (0) all well below their usual standards, whilst Chris Schraam (6+1) was certainly not spectacular either, meaning Sheffield fell way short of challenging for a win.

Redcar Shock Plymouth
The Redcar Bears pulled off a shock 42-48 victory at Plymouth last night to condemn the Devils to their second home defeat of the season.
Plymouth took the upper hand in heat 1 with a 4-2 thanks to a win for guesting number one Ricky Kling, but Aaron Summers and Justin Sedgeman struck back in heat 3 to pull the Bears level once more.
The meeting remained very tight in the early stages, with a pair 3-3s keeping the scores level until Matej Kus defeated Kling, resulting in a Redcar heat advantage to give them the lead for the first time in the meeting.
Going into the 9th race of the night, Redcar still led by two, but Matej Kus and flying reserve Max Dilger raced away for the win to subsequently extend their lead to six.
After two consecutive level races, heat 12 arrived, and the visiting Bears duly delivered a crushing maximum from Dilger and Sedgman to well and truly give them the upper hand at 10 points up with only three heats remaining.
Plymouth did give their home fans hope of a comeback as they bounced straight back with a heat 13 5-1 of their own from Kling and Ryan Fisher, but in the penultimate race of the night Redcar wrapped up the win, Dilger and Summers moving them ten clear going into the final race as they raced to the chequered flag.
The home side did restore some pride in the final race as Kling and Fisher took the win, but it was too little too late as the Devils went down to Redcar by a 42-48 scoreline.
The Plymouth efforts were spearheaded by the duo of Ricky Kling (13) and Ryan Fisher (11+3) who both performed excellently. James Holder (5+1) and reserve Nicki Glanz (5) were both solid even if not spectacular and carried out their roles well, but the rest of the side really did under perform. Todd Kurtz (6) really needed to do a little better in the middle order, whilst Brendan Johnson (0) was very poor at three, alongside a disappointing display from reserve Robert Ksiezak (2+1). The wealth of poor performances meant that Plymouth really didn’t have a chance, despite Kling and Fisher doing well, and they now slip to the bottom of the Premier League table after a disappointing start.
Meanwhile, it was a very strong Redcar performances with their whole team performing well. Reserve Max Dilger (13+3) was the really match winner, but in the middle order Matej Kus (9+1) and Aaron Summers (9+2) both contributed very well with paid double figures. The whole main body were performed solidly, with Justin Sedgman (6) and Carl Wilikinson (4) adding valuable points. Although not brilliant, number one Jordan Frampton (6+1) also did OK, and as a result Redcar ran out as shock winners.
Plymouth Devils – 42

Witches Withhold Late Plymouth Charge
The Ipswich Witches managed to withhold a late charge by the Ben Barker led Plymouth Devils to take a narrow 47-46 home victory in an enthralling Premier League clash.
It was Team GB man Barker who got the visitors off to a thrilling start, as he combined with Todd Kurtz for a heat 1 maximum. Yet that four point lead was instantly cancelled out by the home team, with Aussie reserve duo Cameron Heeps and Rohan Tungate scoring a 5-1 of their own for Ipswich.
After a 3-3 in the third race of the evening kept the scores level, it was Tungate who again provided the goods for the home side, this time being joined at the front Mathieu Tresarrieu for a maximum which put the Witches four points clear.
That deficit was halved in heat 5, with Barker winning his second outing with Kurtz taking third for a 4-2. Another pair of level heats followed, but heat 8 saw a third Ipswich 5-1, again involving Tungate, as he crossed the line behind team-mate Kevin Doolan to move their side 6 points ahead.
Doolan then led the way in another heat advantage for the hosts, this time a 4-2 that moved them 8 ahead, before Dakota North and Leigh Lanham beat Ryan Fisher and James Holder for a 5-1 which increased the Witches lead to 12 points.
This enabled the in-form Barker to take a tactical ride for the Devils, and he duly delivered a third victory in as many rides for a 7-2 which narrowed the gulf between the sides to seven.
With four heats remaining, the meeting looked in the balance, and after Ryan Fisher delivered a race win in heat 12 which resulted in a Plymouth 4-2, the home side led by just five.
Although Barker won yet again in heat 13, his partner Cory Gathercole made no inroads at the back, leaving the visitors in need of a heat advantage in heat 14 to keep their hopes of a victory alive.
However, the penultimate race of the night ended as a 3-3, meaning that victory for Ipswich was assured, although they were still chasing maximum points in the final race. In the end, it was Plymouth who cemented a losing bonus point though, with Barker completing an 18 point maximum by leading home Ryan Fisher for a Devils 5-1.
Ipswich will be happy with an all around team display which gave them victory in a tricky home meeting against a strong Plymouth side. Every rider scored at least paid 5, and the main body of the team really were very solid, with Kevin Doolan (12) the pick of four riders who all scored at least paid 8. Yet it was Aussie hotshot Rohan Tungate who again proved the match winner, scoring a sublime 10+3 from the number 7 race jacket to guide the Witches to the win. In the end, the fact that only 5 out of 15 last places went to home riders proved the difference.
Plymouth will probably be pleased to have a losing bonus point to take away from them, especially given the fact that they were carrying two passengers who failed to score in Gino Franchetti and James Holder. It was the stunning performances of Ben Barker (18) and Ryan Fisher (12+1) that gave the Devils hope despite Cory Gathercole (6) under performing as well. However, the away side may well be kicking themselves over the fact that they failed to capitalise on two of their team putting in wonderful away performances at the same time, something that is unlikely to be replicated again this season.

Scunthorpe Scorpions Sting Edinburgh
A superb performance from the Scunthorpe Scorpions handed them a comprehensive 56-37 win over the Edinburgh Monarchs on Monday.
Guest Richie Worrall continued his lightning start to the season by winning heat 1 for a Scunthorpe 4-2 before he joined forces with Palm Toft for a similar outcome in heat 3 after the reserves race ended level.
Birmingham reserve Josh Auty then opened his afternoon by crossing the line in first place ahead of teammate Ashley Birks for a maximum which doubled the Scunthorpe lead to 8 points.
A third Richie Worrall victory handed the home side another heat advantage to pull 10 ahead, before Jorgensen and Auty took the second Scunthorpe 5-1 of the day in heat 6 in a ride which also annulled a tactical ride from Andrew Tully for Edinburgh.
Jorgensen won heat 8 with Birks in third for a 4-2, before Palm Toft joined Richie Worrall at the front for another 5-1 ahead of brother Steve Worrall, guesting for the Monarchs.
At 20 points behind, Edinburgh used their second and final tactical ride, and Thomas Jorgensen rode brilliantly to defeat Pijper’s quest and ensure the Scorpions lead remained intact with a 4-4.
Heat 11, Scunthorpe went 22 points ahead with another 4-2, but Edinburgh finally had something to cheer about in heat 12 as Dyer and Pijper crossed the line for a 5-1.
It was that 18 point gap that stayed until the end after the sides traded 4-2s in the final two races.
The home side had Josh Auty on the top of his game to score 15+1, but he received excellent support from Thomas Jorgensen (11+1) and the guesting Richie Worrall (13). Every team member played their part in a strong all-round display, with everyone scoring at least 3+1.
Edinburgh did have three double figures scorers in Cook, Pijper and Dyer, but they had to carry too many passengers with three riders scoring 4 or less. The middle order very much under performed, with Andrew Tully (1) and Matthew Wethers (2) way off the pace.

Tungate Magic Gives Ipswich Witches the Win
Australian reserve Rohan Tungate scored a magical 15+3 point haul to guide the Ipswich Witches to a 54-40 home victory over the Sheffield Tigers in the Premier League.
It was Sheffield who started the afternoon in style with a 5-1 in the opening race thanks to Hugh Skidmore and Josef Franc, only to it cancelled out straight away by a Witches maximum courtesy of Tungate and fellow Aussie hotshot Cameron Heeps.
Daktoa North then joined forces with Kevin Doolan to take a 4-2 ahead, before Tungate won heat 4 it only ended with a 3-3. Ipswich then pulled clear of the visitors with two consecutive maximums in heats 5 and 6 thanks to North and Doolan first, and then Tungate and Lanham later.
However, that enabled Sheffield to take a tactical ride, and American Ricky Wells duly delivered as he and Richard Hall pulled Sheffield back into contention with an 8-1.
At three points behind, Sheffield had new-found hope, yet those hopes were rapidly dashed in a match-winning three heat spell for the home side. A fourth victory of the afternoon for Tungate was backed up by teammate Doolan for a maximum, before North partnered Doolan for the same outcome to put the hosts 11 points ahead.
Lanham and Tungate then took the chequered flag for a third Ipwich 5-1 in as many heats, and at 15 points ahead with only 5 heats remaining the points looked secure.
Sheffield hopes lay with number one Josef Franc as he pulled on the black and white helmet in heat 11, but he only scored a 4-3 in the visitors favour after Tressarieu took the win.
Tungate was then defeated for the first time by Wells in heat 12, before Sheffield pulled two points back in heat 13, only to have the 14 point gap restore in the final race of the day by a North and Tungate Ipswich 4-2.
Although Ricky Wells scored very well for Sheffield, they will be disappointed that he never really received much support. Nobody else scored double figures, and although most riders contributed, one of Josef Franc or Emiliano Sanchez really needed to put in a big score of the visitors were to have a chance.
Meanwhile, Ipswich will be delighted with a superb team effort where everybody carried out their roles well. Rohan Tungate was certainly the star at reserve, but Dakota North also backed him up with a brilliant performance, as did Kevin Doolan. Every rider scored at least 5 paid 6 with the exception of Matthieu Tressarieu (3) and although his display was poor, he won heat 11 when it mattered with Franc going for double points.

Newcastle Cruise To Victory Over Scunthorpe
The Newcastle Diamonds opened up their Premier League campaign with a comfortable victory over Scunthorpe after a brilliant 13+1 haul from reserve Richie Worrall.
It was Scunthorpe who got their night off to a wonderful start with a 5-1 from Thomas Jorgensen and guesting number one Nick Morris. Richie Worrall then gave Newcastle their first heat advantage in heat 2 with a win as his brother Steve crossed the line in third for a 4-2.
The Diamonds then reversed the 2 point deficit in their favour after a maximum courtesy of Ludvig Lindgren and Claus Nedermark. A 3-3 followed in heat 4, only for the Scorpions to grab a 5-1 of their own thanks to Morris and Jorgensen again, this time against Lindgren and Nedermark, to re-establish their 2 point lead.
Stuart Robson then defeated Josh Auty next time out to pull the home side level, before Mark Lemon and Steve Worrall gave the home fans more to cheer about with the 2nd Newcastle 5-1 of the night, putting them 4 points ahead.
A pair of level races ensued with Richie Worrall and Ludvig Lindgren taking race wins for Newcastle, before Chris Henry and Stuart Robson scored a great 5-1 to double their lead to 8.
The quick Richie Worrall and Lindgren then teamed up in heat 12 and duly delivered the goods with a maximum to extend the Diamonds lead to 12 and seemingly put them out of sight.
A great win for Mark Lemon in heat 13 secured the win for the hosts, and after Nedermark won heat 14 to give Newcastle a 4-2 they had secured the maximum points on offer as well. They ended the night with another heat advantage as Richie Worrall ended his night with another win to give a 4-2 with Lemon in third.
Newcastle will be delighted with a real team effort where everyone contributed in a well-rounded display. Every rider scored at least paid 5 and did their job, whilst they also had the trump card of Richie Worrall banging in a big score at reserve, whislt Ludvig Lindgren also scored paid double figures. The only rider whose performance could be slightly questioned was number one Stuart Robson, but his poor score was more than made up for by the efforts of his team-mates.
Meanwhile, Scunthorpe will not be too unhappy with how things went, because Brough Park is a tough place to go. However, they didn’t really have a big scorer, and although guest Nick Morris did well, nobody else made double figures. The contribution of Thomas Jorgensen was very promising, whilst Josh Auty added a useful 9 points. However, the problems lay in the middle order with Palm Toft and Aarnio, who scored only 6 points and conceded two 5-1s. The reserves also underperformed slightly, with neither Birks nor Hart adding the decent score at reserve that the Scorpions needed if they were to get something from the meeting.
